6 infinity stones of better singing technique

Hey there, it's EternalRamblings, your trusty and crazy vocal coach and the official captain of the karaoke squad!

Are you tired of your friends and family plugging their ears as soon as you break out into a song? Do you find yourself constantly hitting the wrong notes and struggling to sustain your breath while singing? Fear not, my vocally challenged friend!

With a few simple Ramblings’ tips and tricks, you too can improve your singing technique and become the next Beyoncé (or at least sound less like a dying cat… meow!).

Here are 6 infinity stones that when mastered can make you the ruler of the singing universe. They seem trivial, but are they?

1. MIND STONE: Warm up & build the mind-muscle connection!

Just like an athlete wouldn't go out for a race without stretching his body first, a singer shouldn't start belting out tunes without properly warming up their voice and body both. So, before you start your shower concert or step up on that stage, do a few vocal exercises to get your vocal cords ready for some action. Start with some simple lip trills, sirens or hums to loosen up your mouth and throat muscles. Then, move on to some scales from simple major/minor to obscure middle eastern ones to practice hitting different notes.

2. SPACE STONE: Breathe, baby, breathe!

Singing is all about breath control. Believe me or not, breathing is the glue for all your other efforts when it comes to singing. If you're constantly running out of breath mid-song, mid-sentence, or even mid-word then it's high time to focus on your breathing technique. Take deep breaths from your diaphragm (aka your belly) rather than your chest. Look at sleeping babies for inspiration. This will give you more control over your breath and allow you to sustain longer notes. It can wow! your audience when you stretch out that note to unbelievable lengths.

3. POWER STONE: Don't be shy, sing out loud!

One of the biggest mistakes amateur singers make is not singing with enough volume and power. If you're too shy to sing out loud, then you're not going to get very far. The truth needs to be spoken. If your audience can’t hear you, what’s the point? Even though singing quietly might be less embarrassing, it won't help you improve your technique. So, sing loud, use a microphone and always remember loud doesn't mean you start pushing your voice and strain it. Power comes from posture, breath and technique.

4. REALITY STONE: Find your range and stick to it (just for now)

Not everyone is born with a Steven Tyler-level range, and that's okay! The range is usually a product of practice anyway. It's important to find your current vocal range and stick to it while you work on improving your technique and making your vocal cords more flexible. Singing songs that are outside of your range too quickly can strain your voice and make it harder for you to hit the right notes. So, start with songs that are within your range, and maybe just slightly outside your comfort zone and gradually work your way up as your technique improves.

5. TIME STONE: Practice, practice, practice and then practice some more

Like anything else in life, and I mean everything, practice makes you perfect, well, perfection is a myth but it does make you really really really good at what you do. So, make time every day to practice your singing, even if it's just for a few minutes. You can sing along to your favourite songs, do vocal exercises, or even take a singing lesson. The more you practice, the better you'll get. Just be patient and consistent.

6. SOUL STONE: Embrace your unique voice

Finally, remember that everyone's voice is unique and can be trained. Singing is a skill after all. Just because you don't sound like Adele, Billie or Sam Smith doesn't mean you can't be a great singer with your voice. Record your voice and get over the inhibition of listening to your own voice on recording. Never say no to an opportunity to sing even if it is just for 10 people. Copy your favourite artist but add your own spice and ease to it, that's how you'll find your own style. So, embrace your voice, learn to love it and use it to express yourself in your way. After all, there's only one you, and that's pretty awesome. Own it!

So, there you have it - a few simple yet effective tips to help you improve your singing technique with time. Remember, it's okay to struggle a little bit at first - we all have to start somewhere. With a little bit of practice and some patience, you'll be singing like a superstar in no time. Now, go forth and let your beautiful voice shine! Just remember, once you master all the techniques, snap responsibly.
